Oven Repair

Oven Repairs

Ovens are responsible for our cooking and baking needs. So, it can be very frustrating if, just before the big Christmas dinner, your oven stops heating. Call Zenith Repair Co and we will come to carry out any oven repairs. Though we generally don't recommend DIY repairs, there are a few basic repairs you can handle yourself.

Issues Heating

This can be due to either the igniter being faulty (a gas oven) or the heating element being broken (electric oven).

If you have a gas oven, test the burners. If you don't hear the usual clicks and whoosh sound that accompany the ignition turning on, then you need to replace the igniter. Separate the range from the oven, remove a few screws and then detach the quick-release connection. Install a new igniter and then return everything to its original place.

If you have an electric oven, test the heating element. If it doesn't turn red, then you need to replace it. For this repair, you only need a screwdriver. Separate the range, take out any covers or screws, and then insert the new element. Once you're done, put everything back in its place.

Inconsistent Temperature

If you notice that your oven is not heating to the right temperature or that your food is taking longer to cook than usual, then you need to check the temperature sensor. Check to see if it is touching the wall of the oven. If this is the case, it isn't reading the correct internal temperature and needs adjusting. You can also use an ohmmeter to test the sensor's functionality. The resistance of the temperature sensor should rise with the oven's internal temperature. If this isn't happening, then you need to replace the sensor.

If changing the temperature sensor doesn't change things, then the oven needs recalibration. Investing in an oven thermometer costs around $6 and can be useful in these situations. Start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (176.67 degrees Celsius). For the next two hours, record the temperature changes in twenty-minute intervals. After, add up all of the temperatures and divide by the number of recordings. If there is a large variation between the results and the temperature to which you preheated your oven, then you need to manually adjust the oven's temperature dial.

Issues Cooking

This is a clear indication that the oven needs to be repaired. First, start by checking the temperature sensor and the heating element. If you notice that the temperature sensor doesn't increase with the oven's internal temperature, then you need to replace them.

You may also need to learn what works best for your oven, in terms of cooking. Ovens are made differently, with many hot and cold spots. You may need to adjust the height of your cooking racks or even rotate your food so that your cooking isn't affected.
